I think the David Cronenberg film Scanners is a masterpiece of the sci-fi genre.

It involves these people who have psychic powers due to a drug that was giving to pregnant mothers. One of the "scanners" as they are called, ends up running this dangerous coalition and uses his mental abilities to blow someone's head off at a meeting. He escapes and begins killing any scanners who refuse to join his crazy group. However, a doctor at the same company has found a guy capable of using his powers to stop the baddie before he is also recruited to the group.

Michael Ironside from the TV series V is always great as a villain, like in Total Recall he was Arnie's nemesis. He also appeared in Free Willy and Starship Troopers.

It's obviously a very old film, so it looks outdated, but I think it will be great as a remake. The sequels are quite good too, although not everyone is aware there are any. They also released two spin off movies where a boy grows up to be a cop, and he is a scanner on the good side of the law. By the time the series had gone off the rails, the acting wasn't considered great, but the story was head and shoulders above the original.

Sequels? I wasn't aware of that.

Haven't managed to find Scanners yet, unfortunately. Cronenberg is an under-appreciated director.

And I hear heads assplode.
